Motherplant was 120 cm in 12 years, a slow growing sulphur

golden column, dark bronze in winter. Keeps out in drought,

bad soils, pests, burning dry sun and frosts.

1989-ben Sopronban Platycladus orientalis ’Aurea’ magvetésből szelektált fajta. Az anyanövény 12 évesen kb. 120-130 cm magas, lassú növekedésű karcsú oszlop, viszonylag merev ágrendszerű, kagylósan ill. spirálisan növő pikkelyes oldalágrendszerrel. Belül zöldebb, kívül világos kénsárga, télen a növény sötét óarany színű. Szárazságtűrő, ill.mésztűrő. Talajra nem igényes, betegségek nem károsították. Napégésre, visszafagyásra nem hajlamos. Intenzív szép nyári aranyos színe, karcsú alakja miatt díszkertek szoliternövényeként jól alkalmazható sötét hátterek elé. A fajta állami elismerést kapott.

Wild found in a private garden. Looks like a usual small goldie,

but in winter becomes a red-bronzish colour. Similar to

’Lakatos’, but has a more characteristic colour, which is not

                                                           creamy bronze.

Podocarpus totara - Totara. N.Z. native. A prized timber tree. Leaves of the young tree a dull brown changing when older to dark blue-green. The young tree grows quite fast and new seasons growth is long, straggly and waves all about. It will settle down on its own without staking. It makes a handsome specimen tree with a large round head in time. Can be used in the smaller garden as it is easily controlled by trimming. It is now being used as a hedge or shelter tree as it is so nice trimmed. Can be used for topiary too. Podocarpus totara has the ability to re-shoot after being cut back to bare wood. The Totara is particularly hardy and will grow in almost any soil and situation. Moderately salt wind hardy. 5 metres high x 3.5 metres wide in 10 years. Zone 9. Cedar Lodge text.

Podocarpus totara ‘Aureus’ - Golden Totara. N.Z. native. Same as the species in the wild but foliage a pale green in spring gradually hardening off to yellow then a brilliant deep gold in winter. The golden form is a male plant. Because this plant is slower growing than the species it can be grown in the smallest of gardens and trimmed to any shape. It is becoming more and more popular each year especially for farm shelter. Stock have no desire to eat the prickly foliage unless really forced to and with trimming it stays clothed right to the ground. Responds extra well to heavy trimming therefore Podocarpus totara ‘Aureus’ can be kept to almost any size or shape required. Eventually developes into a particularly spectacular shelter tree. Arguably N.Z’s most under-rated tree. Dislikes wet sites. Where there are animals, double fencing is still essential. 3.5 metres high x 3.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden. Photo 2 shows a cut hedge. Photo 3 trimmed as a Pillar. Photo 4 a street planting. Cedar Lodge text by Greg Sampson.

Prumnopitys andina (Poepp. ex Endl.) de Laub. 1978 – Lökü szilvatiszafa – Lleuque plum yew > Podocarpus andinus

Prumnopitys andina - Native of Chile. Formerly known as Podocarpus andinus. Occurs at elevations greater than 600 metres altitude. It appears to be adapted to a wide range of conditions, including low winter temperatures and dry summers. Not found in the lowland coastal range. In this area seems to dislike our salt wind. Seems adapted to relatively cool, high rainfall areas near summits of coastal ranges. Soils that are saturated most of the year is ideal i.e. rainfall of over 300 cm. In N.Z. it may be suggested that the climate of the Milford Sounds (South west) is ideal. Fog and condensation in the canopy contributes to additional moisture in these forests. Cedar Lodge text.

Prumnopitys exigua de Laubenfels ex Silba 1984 – Boliviai szilvatiszafa – Bolivian plum yew

Prumnopitys ferruginea (G. Benn. ex D. Don) de Laub. 1978 – Miro szilvatiszafa – Miro plum yew > Podocarpus ferrugineus

Prumnopitys ferruginea - Native of NZ. Miro. Formerly Podocarpus ferrugineus. An important timber tree. Likes good soil and plenty of moisture but has been known to grow quite well on rather sandy soil. Stands trimming very well and would make a good hedge although maybe a little too slow. 2 metres high x 1 metre wide in 5 years in our Nursery/Garden. Zone 5. Cedar Lodge text.

Prumnopitys taxifolia (Solander & D. Don) de Laubf. 1978 – Matáj szilvatiszafa – Matai plum yew > Podocarpus spicatus

Prumnopitys taxifolia - Native of NZ. Matai. Formerly Podocarpus spicatus In its juvenile state this tree is straggly and unattractive; looks like a bunch of dead twigs. In the adult stage it is quite handsome, the foliage then resembling a slightly smaller Miro. Matai will stand somewhat drier and poorer conditions than Miro. 1.8 metres high x 1.6 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden. Zone 9. Cedar Lodge text.

A local conifer nurseryman has since become a friend and mentor. Don Howse told me about this broom. He told me of a broom on Interstate 84 in Gresham, OR. It is very easy to find - just look to the south side of the freeway, just West of 181st avenue. The broom is a very compact one, forming a doughnut-like growth at the top of a Douglas fir beside the freeway. Griffith text.
